Chapter Twelve

Amon

My brother thought he was smooth when he left earlier, slipping out and away as if he had reaper duties to attend to. But he can’t hide that sneaky look from me, and I just know that he figured something out that we don’t know. Hell, he’s known more than us this entire time, keeping a calm composure despite the fact that our mate is both gone and upset with us at the same time. Does he really have so much faith in her? In the connection?

If so, I envy the bastard.

They spent the most time together, creating the strongest bond between them. Is that how he knows she’ll be back? By blindly trusting in it? For the first time in my life, I'm jealous of my younger brother. I’d give anything to have that kind of security. To feel the love for her blooming in my own chest, but I’m just not at that point. I want her, of course. My body craves hers in a way I’ve never experienced before, but it’s not the real connection at work here. It’s the beginning of it.

So now I’ve resorted to sneaking around behind my brother’s back while he sneaks into our father’s home. And of course he comes here, of all places, after leaving us behind. With how much I was raging like an asshole about our father, it doesn’t surprise me that he didn’t invite us along. Well, I’m sure he would have invited Liam, but us two come as a package deal most days of the week. Despite our power being completely separate, we’re the most in tune with each other; Two sides of the same coin when our brother is alone.

Different.

Nicer.

More human.

And yes, I envy him for that too. There’s actually quite a list of things I have to envy Adonis for. Both his character and strength are something to admire, which is exactly why I’m following him around like an idiot. If he has a plan or an idea of any kind, it’s usually something worthwhile. I want to be a part of that. Plus the knowledge my father gives him is deeper than that of something he’d give to me. We don’t exactly get along. That’s my fault entirely.

Instead of sneaking into the mansion behind him, I circle the building, following his essence until he settles into my father’s office on the top floor of the house. That’s when I scale the wall to sit just on the edge of the window, cracking it open when I notice the heavy drapes are pulled to block any sight or light coming from the outside. Their voices are low, but audible if I strain my neck toward the window.

“I’m surprised that you came,” Lucifer drawls. “You don’t usually go against your brother’s wishes like this.”

I can almost hear Adonis shrug. “It’s not because I’m afraid of him. He’s just usually good at calling the shots. Not right now though, not about this.”

Lucifer’s chair creaks, and I wish with all I am that I could peek inside and see whether or not he leaned forward or back.
